I don't really like flowers
It's not that I dislike flower. I mean, I like getting them. I like fresh flowers around the house. But I don't have a passion for flowers, like, say, I believe Laurel has a passion for flowers. And though I photograph quite a few flowers, it's not flowers that I love to shoot — it's light.
I've had a long-running fascination with light. It's what drove me to pick up a camera in high school and spend 8 to 10 hours at a time in the dark room. When I was a theatre director, the lighting designer played as big a role in the productions a the actors did. I love the way it distorts, reflects, and refracts. For me, it's not about capturing light; its about playing with it.
I photograph flowers because I love the way they play with light. Today, gave me the perfect chance to illustrate what I mean.
Here is today's Model. (She's a little bigger than my fist.):
And this is how she danced with light:

Like tiny fireworks.
For me, the effect of light is the core of art. It's why I look at paintings. It's why Vermeer is my favorite artist.
Patterns, textures, shadows - they all depend on the light.
Beautiful. I only just discovered these wonderful huge puffballs a couple of days ago for the first time. Only one photo so far, and I had a dog on a leash in my other hand at the time, so no time to really sit and join the dance. Another time.
These are very beautiful pics. Mmmmmm.
Awesome shots! Love 'em.
Yeah. Cool. I love the last one; I want to be inside it.
