It's interesting. In the first half of this year, two very different covers of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" have been released — one by The Bad Plus, on their album Prog, the other by Patti Smith on her amazing album of covers, 12. (For the record, I think this is one of the weaker songs on 12, but that's only because it's an outstanding album.) So, here's a little side-by-side taste test for you, starting with the original. (Tip: For kicks, try playing all there at once.)
OK. I'm a cover song junkie, who started collecting cassette bootlegs and 45s as a kid. Well, the internet has been kind to my obsession. I've started a collection of cool (or not so cool) covers.
For now, though, one I love despite the fuzzy recording and drunken playing. The greatest rock band of the 90s (The Afghan Whigs) covering the best thing to ever come out of the Manchester music scene (New Order). You can argue with me on either of those points, but I won't budge.
On a side note: Seems the Whigs are back in the studio recording a couple of new tracks for a Rhino Records compilation.
