Whatsnext went to see The Bad Plus in Ann Arbor at Old Town School of Music in Chicago the other day. Knowing that I was getting over a cold, and that Dave King, the drummer, is a buddy of mine, she sent the following well wishes:
It's not that I dislike flower. I mean, I like getting them. I like fresh flowers around the house. But I don't have a passion for flowers, like, say, I believe Laurel has a passion for flowers. And though I photograph quite a few flowers, it's not flowers that I love to shoot — it's light.
I've had a long-running fascination with light. It's what drove me to pick up a camera in high school and spend 8 to 10 hours at a time in the dark room. When I was a theatre director, the lighting designer played as big a role in the productions a the actors did. I love the way it distorts, reflects, and refracts. For me, it's not about capturing light; its about playing with it.
I photograph flowers because I love the way they play with light. Today, gave me the perfect chance to illustrate what I mean.

I'm not much for beards these days. Usually, when I grow one, it's because I'm too lazy, busy, or grumpy to shave. Otherwise, I only have a beard when I shave my head. Somehow, though, the thought of removing anything that protects my face from the 20-below wind chill seems unbearable. So, here is today's Bill:
